Tsaritsin, founded in 1586, Stalingrad (1925-1961). It's a large river port and industrial centre. The population of it is 1,005,000 people. The city stretches for more than 70 km along the right bank of the Volga river.
The city was founded in the sixteenth century on an island, opposite the place where the river Tsaritsa flows into the Volga river, to protect the water routs where the Volga meets the river Don.
At the beginning of the seventeenth century Tsaritsin was burnt down and then newly rebuilt on the right bank of the Volga in 1615.
In the nineteenth century it became a large railway station and a river port, connecting Donbass and the Caucasus with the centre of Russia.
During the second world war the Russian army defended the city (July 1942 - February 1943). This long struggle became a turning point in the Second World War and the courage of the soldiers played an important role. To commemorate the victory on the Volga the memorial was constructed on Mamayev Kurgan in 1963-1967. The authors are E.V. Vuchetich, Ya.B. Belopolsky, V.A. Demin, V.E. Mat. The Volgo-Don Canal (built in 1952) starts at Volgograd. It connects all five seas of the European part of Russia into one transporting system. The total length of the canal is 101 km. It contains 13 locks, 13 dams and dikes.
